  • Ajoutée 12 janv. 2022
  • Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal-every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Isabella is obscenely powerful. The only member of the family who's powers could be argued to be stronger is Pepa, but Isabella's are more diverse and better controlled. And Bruno was very right, her power grew; just imagine, as the title suggests, she truly explores her potential and figures out her true limits

Mirabel during the movie actually fullfills all the positive prophecies and changes the course for the bad ones.

She is the one that helps Isabella's prophecy come true and also the one that changes the course of the "bad" prophecy given to Dolores.

@CBandit Context matters. And the truth is that it's not about it being a block of text. Or even necessarily the content of that text. It's that this block of religion is being forced into the middle of a conversation not about it in any way, without even an attempt to loosely connect it to that conversation.

Also: immediately a thing that can offend a nonchristian: "We deserve hell" It's right in the beginning of the block, and people not already buying into the religion but trying to live well tend not to like "Worship or burn forever" as a premise to start believing. Comes across as a bit of a threat, rather than uplifting.

I like how despite these powers being “gifts”, they’ve come with some downsides resulting in the characters insecurities like Luisa being pressured to be mentally & emotionally strong as she is physically or the pressure Isabella feels to be as perfect as the flowers she grows. The songs come with lessons that even the strongest things can crumble and the most objectively hideously natural things are beautiful in their own way

    • Sword of Tauberg
      Sword of Tauberg Il y a 11 heures +3

Think the downside comes from the unreasonable expectations put on the person blessed with the Gift, rather than the Gift itself. The movie is a reminder to not put all our burdens on those we think are capable of bearing them, and to accept that everyone needs a break, comfort, and room to grow.

    • BambiLena666

@Re- Blitz in my mind all the character abilities are strenghts(or skills) that represent a role in the family. I think Bruno corresponds to the person that can "see" problems and tries to warn people, especially when they ask for advice, but the people he wants to help with his warnings just end up resenting him for it. On one hand if they give up on something because he warned them it would be bad they resent him, if his prediction comes true they resent him for "being right" and eventually they start connecting the person to bad moods and bad things happening to them.

The downsides happen when the family pushes them to just do and be one thing, putting huge expectations on their skills and roles instead of them as people.

    • Re- Blitz
      Re- Blitz Il y a jour +18

Another example being how people don’t really always like the future, and since Bruno could tell the future they associated that distaste and unpredictability of the future with him.

Hello I have something important to tell you:

The bible makes it clear that God is holy. This holy God holds a perfect moral standard. Sadly, we have all fallen very short of that standard(Romans 3:23). The penalty for sin/imperfection is Hell(Revelation 21:8).

Thankfully the bible also says that God is rich in mercy and grace. That is why He sent His perfect Son to die on a cross to save us from our sin. You and I broke God's law, but Jesus paid our fine. Then Jesus rose from the dead, 3 days later, thus defeating death! (John 3:16-18)

"He that believeth in the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36 "But God commendeth His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10

i personally like What Else Can I Do over Let It Go. not only did the latter get quickly overrated (just like the movie), but it also somewhat contradicts the events of the story. in the song, Elsa talks w/ confidence and stating she'll embrace her powers rather than fear them, "letting it go" as she accepts who she is and decides to look to the future rather than worrying what everyone else thinks. yet, in the remainder of the movie, Elsa still pushes everyone away and fears she'll hurt someone w/ her ice magic, sectioning herself off from the kingdom. i believe the original concept of Elsa was showing her to be more bold and confident after singing that song and other concepts had HER as the antagonist rather than Hans. now we go to Isabella. What Else Can I Do is Isabella learning to allow herself to be more open and true to herself, even if what she does, says and creates isnt perfect and up to everyone's expectations because it's still HERS and thats all that matters in the long run. we didnt get to see much of Isa after because we refocus on Mirabel and the tension from the Encanto failing, but based on her actions and the ending, Isa did in fact change and keep true to her denouncement of perfection and declaration shes being true to herself from now on. both songs at their core are similar, yes, but one character actually changed whereas the other took about half a movie to realize she shouldnt run away from who she is and her problems

God Yahweh loves, and offers Salvation Only by Faith in Christ Jesus, because we sin and deserve hell, but God who is Great in Mercy sent His Son Christ to Save us (as prophesied in Isaiah where he is called "Mighty God "and in Micah where it is said of Him that He is from the days of Eternity), he became a man and lived among men, but without sinning, and suffered the punishment of our sins, he was filled with the Holy Spirit, he gave his Life by ours (as prophesied in Isaiah 53 and Daniel 9), and was raised from the dead by the Power of the Holy Spirit, by Order of his Father (as prophesied in the Psalms, proclaiming that he would not see his body corruption) , paying our evil with his death, giving us Salvation only by Faith, not by works so that no one can boast. Glory to the Triune God, God bless you.

Elsa was forced to abandon everything...y'all must be really young when watched the movie because you didn't understand her reasons. I was a 16 closeted lesbian when I watched it , Elsa story is almost the same I had with my coming out and That's why many gay people feel represented by Elsa.

Elsa was forced to hide her powers, her parents forced her to live in her room, she was never encouraged to talk about her feelings, she had to stop talking to her parents and her parents died, her parents didn't know what to do in the moment she would become the queen...so she had to figure everything by herself, Elsa doesn't know how to control her emotions, like Peppa, and doesn't know how to have a healthy relationship with other human being, her sister for example, for being isolated so many years, since she was a kid she had this mindset of being dangerous so she doesn't know how to tell to Ana she has powers without make her feel scared. When the truth is revealed everything she sees is people having fear of her and a man wanting to capture her. She didn't know the biggest damage she caused to the kingdom and for once doesn't want to have a responsibility she never wanted because it didn't seem possible people would respect her for being different.

She and Anna had communication issues to express their feelings, again their parents forced them to stop interacting.

Elsa had trust issues , when people want to help you and actually tell you they love you for who you are...that's really difficult to believe in this person, considering you heard the opposite many years.

For once Elsa wants to think only in herself, if the world she was part of doesn't want to respect her why comeback? Anna teaches her she doesn't have to change to be the queen...she can be the person always has wanted to be and the rest understands that as well.

      That's character development.

Sundews are actually not that dangerous, if they could even be called that. Their sticky hairs are only strong enough to keep struggling insects inside, a human can easily tear a finger away without harm.

I suppose, her powers might supercharge the sundews as its apparent she can influence the plants to grow as if they were moving, and also make them larger and strong enough to carry people. Its a sweet gesture regardless though, shows the newly forged bond between them!

Now I'm imagining 5 year old Isa playing with her powers and making things a child would enjoy like purple sunflowers and 10 foot tall broccoli lol if Abuela really wanted to put her powers to good use, she could've encouraged Isa to grow edible plants. A growing village could really use a lifetime supply of fruit and vegetables.

But if I'm sure she can grow any type if she can grow carnivorous ones like sundews, she just wasn't allowed to grow anything other than flowers. In Pepas case if she's in a bad mood she can just walk to a field and let it out there thus watering the crops.

It's because she's a genetic throwback to Abuela Alma herself- she projected herself on Isabella and put her on a pedestal, which was only reinforced by Bruno's rare blessing prediction, promising her a "dream life." So Abuela started living vicariously through Isabella and encouraged her to indulge in all the decadence Abuela forfeited to become the matriarch, with no regard for who Isabella actually was or how she felt. She is Abuela's fantasy, which is why she thinks nothing of arranging her marriage and trying to breed the magic back.

It may also be why the cracks started to heal once Isabella started breaking free of Abuela's influence- because she's the most blatant example of Abuela's corruption and unintentional abuse. She's really the only one that points to Abuela's subconscious desire to take advantage of the miracle for her own gains, which is precisely the attitude causing it to crack and burn out.

@Ryppl If she'd gotten a normal power it would have almost certainly been textile related.

But she is essentially the new Abuela--the non-powered person that frankly _should_ be non-powered to act as the emotional anchor and the pillar for the rest of the family. Which makes perfect sense given that not only is Abuela losing sight of how to have a healthy relationship to her family and their gifts, but also....she's gonna die eventually. I kinda wished the show touched explicitly on the connection between Mirabel and her Abuela both not having powers.

As a former art student, this song really speaks to me. What CAN I create if I truly believe it doesn't need to be perfect or even acceptable or satisfactory; it just needs to BE. I'm sick of worrying about every little mistake I make in my art. I just want to unleash my imagination onto the paper or into the cyberspace and express my truest innermost self to the world. And yet, every time I merely look at the blank page and canvas, I falter. How can I overcome this?

What I like the most about Isabella in this scene is her reaction to growing the cactus. Usually characters who have similar personalities to Isabella would be disgusted out if that happened to them, but Isabella is instead curious and overjoyed, even mentioning what even though its not perfect it's still beautiful. Stuff like this gives the characters more depth

  • Ramble On with Rosie Lee

I love the subtlety of how Isabella embracing her imperfections has her interacting more and more with her sister. She's feeling less lonely the more comfortable she gets without having the pressure to be perfect. What starts as her pretty much singing to herself ends with her singing with her sister and the healing hug.
It's especially cool when countered with their sister Luisa's song which has her insecurities making her a doormat to anyone who ever needs anything and growth for her is taking a moment to stop being the hero... even if that leaves Mirabel to grab her own glasses and figure out how to manage a donkeycorn. Things that when she's being her usual do everything self that Luisa would definitely be doing for Mirabel. We see her put her glasses back on her right before the fantasy break. Mom friends need a break and perfectionists need to know they're loved regardless of if they're perfect or not. This movie is just so full of insights!

    Lyrics:I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs (big), hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream (whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (whoa)
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go
    A hurricane of jacarandas (woo)
Strangling figs (go), hanging vines (grow)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, woo
I'm comin' through with tabebuia (she's comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (making waves), changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well

3:16 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

3:20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

3:21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.'

14:6 Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

14:7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.'

I just love this song. So, SO rarely in movies do we get songs about women coming together and loving each other. It's even rarer for sister, in my opinion. So to just see a song that's all about sisterhood in the literal, familial sense is beautiful! It's such a wonderful thing to see sisters supporting one another, and to have that experience captivated in song is awesome. Especially since brothers get that kind of arc all the time!

@Kattie V.2 I feel like you should try to revise the movie, perhaps take notes of the points you didn't like and try to do a bit of research to see if some of those points stand as valid.

I've briefly studied cinema and when something wouldn't click for me I would legit make it my task to figure out every instance in the movie that left me feeling like that. Literally taking notes of what I believe could improve to make a movie perfect under my vision (a movie- art will never be perfect since perfection varies so much under the opinion of every viewer)

Not attacking you, I just think some bits can be disproven by going over it with factual backup.
I'm entirely Costa Rican, yet being born as a 1st gen kiddo in the U.S basically caused English to hip check Spanish out of the way of being my first language

Yet Im still able to pick up when Spanish sounds forced/translated/shoe horned in and when Spanish dialogue was actually written by a Spanish speaker, yanno- written first in Spanish instead of having to translate it from an Anglo-Saxon dialogue to a Romance dialogue..

These are one of the few movies that incorporate Spanish without it feeling forced or lacking a coloquial feel to it.

One of my biggest pet peeves in "latino" oriented movies is when a character says something in Spanish and then literally repeats the same thing in English.

And Disney is no exception of doing this but ! I was so pleased whenever Spanish phrases were thrown in or just a casual usage of a word and the movie trekked on as it naturally should. They're all Spanish speakers really, so it makes sense they carry on the conversation naturally with no second mention of the Spanish bits being thrown in.

See Camilo calling Pepa Mami instead of Mom or mommy when trying to ease her down. Its the lil details dude, I know my mom hated it when I would say Momma, Mommy.
      "No, es Mami."

And like I mentioned in another comment, Isabella mentioning Tabebuia, like- thats the actual name of the native plant- a native Hispanic plant.

Then, needless to say, the perfect pronunciation of throwaway words.

The "Ay Agustín!" From Julieta. Tell me you've never heard a Latino put an "Ay!" Before heaving out an exclamation.

And then there's We Don't Talk About Bruno

      My dude

They literally streamed in Pepa, Felix, Dolores, Camilo, Village Fish Lady, Village tummy guy, Village priest and Isabella's perspective on Bruno all in one song AND and !!!!! They freaking told a story (various stories if we get technical) about Bruno (yanno, the centerpiece of the song).

How many songs do you know are able to tell a story?

Now tell me, how many of them did not freaking slap? Its so hecking awesome listening to a song AND a story at the same time.

If anything these are one of the few songs I've ever heard that can set in so many elements and streamline them into one steady and clear message: Bruno is a mysterious key character and Mirabel will need to get HER OWN perspective and opinion on him EXACTLY because of how many random opinions everyone has on Bruno.

If anything, if you think the song can feel a bit random and confusing its literally because that's the end goal of the experience of listening to it. You're supposed to feel as disoriented and overwhelmed as Mirabel. By the end of the song you should be wanting to straighten out the jumbling overload of info in your head- yanno.... just like Mirabel.

I also interpret the line like this: for years, Mirabel for years always suffered at the hands of Isabela’s verbal and sometimes physical abuse. But when she sees that Isabel is at this certain breaking point where she needs support, she helps her. Instead of spiting her and ignoring her for all the abuse she had given her, Mirabel decides to help Isabela instead and help her grow. And this ends up being a good decision, because it ultimately mends their relationship.

Even though every Madrigal member is trying to live up to the perfect image and role, their pressures are also very different and relatable in different ways. Like the main difference between Luisa and Isabela:
Luisa is pressured to MAXIMISE her power and help everyone do everything, because physical work is still arguably the number one thing that people need help with in their daily lives, no matter how much technology advances.

Isabela, on the other hand, is pressured to LIMIT her power to only grow flowers - and preferrably pink and purple ones, because those are the most traditionally feminine and pretty ones. Plants are not as 'perfect' as flowers because they're not as soft and symmetrical. Pretty girls should grow pretty flowers.

Btw blue flowers are very rare in nature and it would be cool and creative for her to grow more blue flowers and plants. But no, they don't want her to be cool or creative. They want her to be a pretty pink/purple barbie doll.

So Luisa ends up being exhausted and stressed, as she overworks and cannot relax. Meanwhile, Isabela is frustrated and resentful (e.g. towards Mirabel who doesn't have to pretend to be the perfect barbie) and resorts to being a "mean girl" to hide her repressed frustration that she's not allowed to fully utilise her power. She wants to prove herself and become more creative and powerful, perhaps more so than Luisa.

Basically Luisa wants to do less, while Isabela wants to do more. The common theme between the both of them is that they just want to be themselves and be free.

I love how their relationship isnt just magically fixed cause Isa admitted she was behaving for the family. Mirabel isnt really LISTENING at first, still focused on fixing the magic, but as the song goes on, and Isa pulls her up, including her in her struggle, Mirabel's focuses shifts naturally to helping Isa and THAT heals the magic. It's so subtlety done, I love iiiiiiiit

my favorite part is when Mirabel sings "Go ...Grow" expressing that sister love and how supportive she is of Isabela.

  • 𝙶𝚕𝚘𝚠𝚒𝚗𝚚𝚃𝚑𝚎𝚊

Did anyone notice when Isabella confessed about not liking Mariano and was only marrying him for the family, that her powers started to grow? And as she was singing her powers grew stronger? This shows how powerful Isabella really is, and she only noticed after she actually talked about it to Mirabel. This brings "breaking out of your shell" to a whole other level

This song really shows that nothing, and nobody is perfect - You always have to have just one flaw, either minor or major, but of you want to be perfect, you’ll have to hide that, which is creating more emotional stress, and you want to let it out, but you can’t, because you want to be perfect, you want to get amazing grades, be beautiful all the time, and have an amazing personality. And this song can also show that Isabela was studying flowers and other plants, as the way she names them, such as “A hurricane of Jacarandas, Strangling Figs, Hanging Vines!” And much more. You know, this woman is basically a nature goddess - if a species was going extinct because it had no more plants to eat, Isabela could make those plants - She could save entire ecosystems, actually, but Abuela is just making her the pretty girl who creates roses.

Something I really appreciate on this song is the voice acting while singing. During "We Don't Talk About Bruno" Isabela sings in a very airy way, like any other Disney Princess. Here her voice has more grit, it's even a lower pitch I think, which really helps the narrative of her shedding the pretense of perfection.
When Mirabel sings her verse she even uses the same melody Isa used in "We Don't Talk About Bruno", since that perfect girl is all she knew her sister as.
Also love how it's more rock (90's spanish rock) inspired than the other songs in the movie.

And then it went downhill and Bruno smashed through a BRICK wall with just a bucket on his head and a rat in his shirt.

I love this song so much
    Isabella truly is so powerful
The entire concept is that abuela and society has pressured her to be perfect and beautiful and when she realizes she is so much more than that she gains more power
    Very feminist song.
Also the sisterly love and support is amazing from Mirabel, she realizes Isabella has been stuck trying to be perfect her entire life and they heal their relationship.
Also the part where Isabella says "what could I do if I just grew what I was feeling in the moment" and all the flowers turn blue and she looks down for a second
It truly shows you her sadness and how ready she is for change
I love it ! ❤ you don't have to be perfect you just have to be.

1st time I heard this, I cannot tell you how it shook me. Disney songs don't make me cry, but this one broke me. I was always made to be the golden child. If I ever dared to act out of what my parents thought wasn't perfect, it was bringing shame to my family. They cared more about what people thought of me instead of who I was as a person. Only when I pushed through and started doing what I really liked and wanted, did I finally become happy for the first time in my life. I finally found myself, I never thought one song could carry my feelings in so few words. Thank you Lin for this amazing song. For all of us out there having unrealistic expectations thrust upon them, this is our battle song.
